I built this trellis very heavy duty as we have some really hard winds during winter and spring. In building it you can use wood lathe instead of 2x2's as cross members but I didn't want to do this every year. LOL
Needed:
2- landscape timbers-cost $3.97 ea. @ Lowes. (as these are inground, they need to be painted before using.)
6- 2x2's 8 feet long-cost $1.67 ea.@ Lowes (cut these in half, so you'll have 2-4 foot pieces)
1- bag concrete mix-cost $3.97 ea.@Lowes
Paint- just what ever color you want, I had white around the house already so didn't have to buy any.
Total cost for parts: $21.93
Paint everything thoroughly before putting it together. This will make it last much much longer than painted after it's built.
First decide where you want the trellis, I had just bought a climbing rose (blaze). Then dig 2 holes , 3 feet apart and 1 foot deep.
Place painted landscape timbers in the holes. Mix up concrete. I've found that mixing 1/2 bag at a time is much easier to do and 1 bag will do both holes.concrete poles into the holes and make sure they're plumb, you do this by taking a level and making sure each side is straight. The picture looks like they're bowed out, but thats an illusion as they are both parallel to each other.Let the concrete dry for 24 to 48 hours if it's not raining, if it is, I'd let it dry 3 days.Next take and using 3 inch wood screws attach the 2X2's making sure each is level. I put a piece in the middle just to give it a bit of decoration. That's all there is to it. With a little time and work and very little money you can build a flower trellis. The reason I decided to build my own is price. I looked at several different places and a heavy trellis that would last more than one or two years, was over $150.00 If you have several climbing roses, it's gets cost prohibitive really quickly. If you have any questions I didn't cover in this , just ask. I'll be glad to walk you through any parts of it. Frank
