An honest Plumber....

First thing I do every morning is let my little inside dogs out, in doing so this morning I was hit with a very unpleasant surprise. I had over 6 feet of water shooting up in the air, but not in a place I was supposed to have pipes. I quickly ran out to turn the water off to the house (before I'd even made coffee :^( ). Then went in search in the phone book for a plumber. Not and easy task in a small town, let me tell you. The one listed in the telephone book and I do mean ONE. Was not a working number. So then I had to wait for the water office to open up, which wasn't till 9am, (this was at 7am) so I had to wait, and wait and wait, finally they opened. The lady told me there she only knew ONE local plumber , gave me his name and number, so I called him. Unfortunately he was backed up in work for like 6 weeks, as he'd contracted to do two construction jobs, and I'd reached him on his cell phone while at the job. He told me on the phone that he knew of one more plumber locally but didn't have his telephone number on him. So he called his wife at home, got the number off caller ID, then called him back with it. He then called me with the plumbers name and number. Whew, talk about a lot to go through...I got hold of Stewart almost on the first ring and he said he'd be right out, and was. They had to dig about a 6 foot long trench down each side of the pipe to even get to the leak, and it was over a foot in the ground. The reason I didn't know we had pipes there, is it was the old pipe from the spring where we used to get water, it hadn't been capped off at the house like we'd thought all these years, but capped down near the spring. Now this pipe was laid nearly 50 years ago by my dad when he first built the house, I was about 3 years old at the time, so had no knowledge of the pipes being in that area. After that many years, the pipe had just given way and sprung a leak. After all the digging (with a shovel not a backhoe) he was able to put a sleeve on the pipe and seal the leak! Yea! It worked, well, knowing plumbers I was scared to death to see how much this little venture was going to cost. But got a very pleasant surprise, Stewart said he wouldn't charge me a service call, and only charged me $108.00 to fix my pipe. Wow, I was ready to jump for joy over that price, I was expecting somewhere in the $300 range or more. Thank goodness for people that don't try to make their entire living off of one customer. I just now am having my first cup of coffee for the day and enjoying it very much...So how was your day?
