Beacon's of Light
I just had a friend that posted an obituary for a handicapped friend of hers. This person had been injured when young and didn't develop as high of intelligence as we all strive for. He was born in 1944, so wasn't a young man, but the obituary itself showed what type of person he was and what the town in which he lived thought of him.
In commenting on her post, I said I think God put these people on this earth for a reason. Not to show people that they're somehow beneath us, but to show us what we should strive for in our daily lives.
People that have these types of disabilities and I'm not sure they are handicaps or disabilities, are some of the most loving people on this earth. They achieve something that those of us with so called "higher intellects" have forgotten what we were put on this earth for, and that's to love each other.
These people don't have any pre-conceived notions about what love is about. They don't care if we're black, white, yellow or pink with blue polka dots. They don't care about sexual preference, what religion you are, or what political affiliation . The them, we're just another person to know and love. I think this is what God was aiming at when he put man on this earth in the first place.
A lot of people get hung up on the little things that are said in the bible and forget the main purpose of why we're here. It's no accident that it's said in the bible to love your fellow man as you would love yourself. We're so all set to judge each other for every little thing when it doesn't conform to our personal way of thinking that we forget this, what's sad is we teach our children to think just like us. I think these people whom we term "handicapped" or "slow" are the Beacon's of light God has placed in our path to remind us of what we're all seeking to achieve. To love our fellow man without reservation. To truly love each other as we love ourselves.
